ASLI MUNZUR PhD Candidate in Genome Sciences University of British Columbia
I am a PhD candidate in the University of British Columbia specializing in cancer genomics. I also concurrently hold a graduate researcher position in the Vancouver Prostate Centre. My research goals are to explore blood-based genomic alterations and translate them into clinical biomarkers.
I develop novel computational tools to characterize clonal hematopoiesis which are age-associated blood mutations using various DNA sequencing techniques. These genomic alterations can be detected based on presence in both plasma cell-free DNA and leukocyte DNA, and help us predict an individual's risk of developing cardiovascular disease and blood cancer. My work aims to study clonal hematopoiesis in individuals with genitourinary cancers to understand its impact on tumor biology, treatment response and long term patient outcomes. I am generously supported BC Cancer Research Centre and UBC Four Year Doctoral Fellowship.
I earned my BSc from the University of British Columbia funded by the prestigious Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award where I explored the evolution of three-spined stickleback for my undergraduate thesis, and I continue to study cancer through an evolutionary lens. I frequently present my research at major international conferences and publish in leading peer-reviewed journals. In recognition of my work on recent radioligand therapies, I received the 2025 Novartis Oncology Young Canadian Investigator Award.
